Start with the kitchen entrées, then check everything included in the order. A cooked main does not necessarily make an entire bento or combination free of raw fish. Midori Sushi’s Northwest Austin menus show why it helps to read both the dish description and the set details.

Before you order

Read beyond the main dish.

Three places to look before placing an order.

01

Kitchen entrées

Start with chicken teriyaki, tonkatsu or combination fried rice. Ask about preparation and availability.

01

Start with the kitchen section

Midori’s regular menu lists options such as chicken teriyaki, breaded pork tonkatsu and combination fried rice. These give a group a place to begin when some people want sushi and others want a cooked main. The restaurant is at 13435 US-183 #301 in Austin. Official menu

When planning together, ask each person which part of the meal matters to them. Someone may simply prefer a hot entrée; someone else may want to avoid every raw item. Those are different ordering requests, so describe the request clearly before choosing a set.

02

Check the whole bento, not just its name

Midori’s lunch page explicitly says that its bento entrées are cooked but the included sushi contains raw items. It also states that lunch specials do not allow substitutions. A Chicken Teriyaki Bento therefore should not be described as an entirely cooked lunch just because its main is grilled chicken. Official lunch conditions

If a diner wants a meal without raw fish, ask which regular-menu dishes can meet that request during the service you plan to attend. Do not build a plan around replacing the sushi in a fixed lunch special when the published policy says no substitutions.

03

Read the full roll description

A roll can contain ingredients prepared in different ways. Midori’s Hot Night Roll, for example, lists both shrimp tempura and spicy tuna. The words “tempura,” “baked” or “fried” in a name are not enough to establish how every filling and topping is prepared. Roll ingredients

Point to the exact menu item and ask, “Does this include any raw fish, including the toppings?” If the answer is unclear, choose another dish whose preparation the restaurant can explain. A published menu can help you narrow the order, but it cannot answer every ingredient or preparation question.

04

A short ordering plan for the table

  1. Agree whether the request is a preference for a cooked main or avoidance of all raw fish.
  2. Choose a kitchen entrée to ask about before choosing a fixed set.
  3. Check included sides, fillings and toppings.
  4. Confirm availability for your lunch or dinner visit.

Food allergy requirements need their own conversation with the restaurant; “cooked” does not establish that an order is suitable for an allergy.
